Whether you are a recreational gambler or a pro, some terms used in the casino might seem foreign to you. Gambling terms can be weird, funny, or ridiculous. Some are so esoteric that you need to play the specific game to get the meaning.

Getting Started

First, here are ten “need-to-know” gambling terms.

  1. Betting Limits – The minimum and maximum amounts allowed per bet.
  2. Cashback– This is a type of casino offer. A player receives a small percentage of their net losses back as a bonus. Typically calculated weekly. Taking advantage of the promotion usually requires nearness to the casino (unless it’s online).
  3. Color Up – Exchanging small chips for bigger denominations. Dealers are often asked to do this to avoid small chips leaving the table and requiring more frequent restocks.
  4. Credit Line – Pre-approved borrowing limit for players. Payment of the borrowed cash differs in time. It depends on your Average Daily Theoretical and your relationship with casino hosts.
  5. Dealer – No, it’s not just a person who literally “deals” the cards. It’s widely used across all types of table games as the person who controls the table. A Croupier is another term for the “dealer,” most commonly used in non-card games like roulette.
  6. Gambler’s Fallacy – The false belief that past outcomes affect future results. It’s a common misconception that often affects your betting strategy and leads to quick losses.
  7. House Edge – The built-in statistical advantage for the casino. All online casino games will have a house edge, and it can range from 0.5% to 10% depending on the game.
  8. Return to Player (RTP) – Percentage of money a game pays back over time.
  9. Stake – Amount of money wagered in a single bet.
  10. Stop-Loss – Predetermined limit where a player quits gambling..

Wacky Jargon

Next are less commonly used expressions and gambling slang. Use them for a quick chuckle.

  1. Donkey – A bad player who makes foolish bets.
  2. Down to the Felt – used to describe a player who has lost their gambling funds or gone broke.
  3. Dusting Off – Losing your entire bankroll.
  4. Flat Tire – Poker term for missing a straight/flush draw, leaving you stuck.
  5. George – A player who tips dealers generously.
  6. Monkey – A $500 chip. It also refers to face cards in Blackjack.
  7. The Nuts – The absolute best possible hand at a given moment in poker.
  8. On Tilt – A player gambling recklessly after losing control.
  9. Pigeon, or Fish – Easy target, a gullible player.
  10. Ploppy – Casual, clueless gambler. Also referring to a clueless guest who sits at a video poker bartop, not playing, only to get free drinks.
  11. Rathole – Sneaking chips off the table to pocket them. This gives the impression of a larger loss to the pit boss.

Slang Specific to Casino Games

Each casino game typically has its own slang. Here’s a quick overview of blackjack, craps, and slots.

Blackjack Slang

  1. Dealer Bust – You win. The sweetest two words in blackjack.
  2. Hard Hand – A hand with no Ace, or an Ace that only counts as 1.
