Most slots will let you stop the reels whenever you want. But it doesn’t mean that, just because you saw the coin there, you can stop it before it goes away.
Slots are not skill machines – the outcome is determined when you place your wager and the spin starts, and stopping the reels has no influence on the outcome of the spin.
In fact, many modern slots will state exactly that within the rules. This is to just underscore that fact for those who aren’t sure. There are a lot of players who think that they “stopped” the reels to get a bonus, but slots don’t work that way – it’s all a matter of the timing of what outcome the random number generator linked to when you hit spin to start the reels.
When you stop a spin, it takes a split second for the reels to come to an actual stop. That window of time is enough for the slot to click by however many positions are visible on the screen to bring down the symbols that were always going to show up. Or, you’ll see a visible and near-instant shift between what was on the screen and what ultimately stops.
So when you hit stop and the symbol is going by, that symbol is guaranteed to go past. If another one goes by or appears in its place, it was going to happen all along, and you just sped up to the conclusion of the spin.
