UPDATE: The transition will now take place July 30, 2024. Identity tier credits from the previous 12 months will be doubled and added to the 2024 tier credits earned at MGM Rewards. Players will then have through the end of 2024 to continue building their tier with MGM Rewards to determine their status for 2025.
It’s now been nearly two years since the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas’s operations were acquired by MGM Resorts International. Since that time, some efforts to unite the property with its Las Vegas siblings have been made, such as the ability to make room charges from other properties back to Cosmopolitan and vice versa. You can also earn tier credits and comps (for MGM Rewards) when using an MGM credit card at the Cosmopolitan.
One of the biggest question marks, however, has been when the Identity Rewards program will be folded into MGM Rewards. Right now, you earn comps separately at the Cosmopolitan vs. other MGM properties, so you get room offers and free play separately for the Cosmopolitan through their system and website, vs. the unified offers for the rest of the MGM portfolio in Las Vegas.
So When Will Cosmopolitan Transition to MGM Rewards?
Previously, it was understood that the transition would occur on or around February 1, 2024. This would make sense, given the MGM Rewards tier year resets then, so all 2024 benefits kick in on that date. However, a fresh email from MGM Rewards had confirmed that the changeover has been delayed further into 2024. Since then, a new date was announced: July 30 2024.
For players, until that date this means a continued isolation of the Cosmopolitan from the rest of MGM Rewards, at least for now. In updated FAQs on the MGM Rewards website, they confirm that Cosmopolitan players will see their play, and offers in turn, brought into MGM Rewards at the appropriate time.
We’ve also learned with these updates that Identity comps earned through slot play will convert to Slot Dollars, while non-slot Identity comps will convert to MGM Rewards points, so how they were earned and how they can be used will be roughly equivalent. Two tier credits with MGM Rewards will be awarded for every tier credit earned on Identity for the 12 months prior to the conversion.
The reasons for the delay haven’t been articulated, but MGM Resorts did encounter many technical issues in the aftermath of their hacking last fall, so it wouldn’t be surprising if that put a slowdown on the transition.
So for now, this means you still earn separately at the Cosmopolitan. For those players who stay at both Cosmo and MGM, you can redeem offers from both back to back while the systems are separate, something that isn’t allowed between MGM properties on the MGM Rewards system, so that’s nice for longer stays.
But for those who were hoping to finally pool their play into one tier system and potentially earn a better tier, we’re almost there.
