88 Fortunes certainly set the tone for a full class of slot machines, featuring so many elements that we take for granted on slot machines today. It’s the granddaddy of pot games, with the ubiquitous pot floating in the center for a chance to pick for a progressive.
The game has seamlessly made the transition to online casinos – let’s go over the features that make the game a true favorite, and where you can play online!
88 Fortunes Base Game
The reel set is a 5×3 structure with all ways paying – there’s no lines, you just need symbols on consecutive reels of the slot. With 11 pay symbols (6 poker symbols and 5 premium symbols) along with the bonus and wild symbols, it’s not the easiest to line up big line hits, but when you do they tend to pay well, especially when the symbols clump together for bigger wins.
The online game features the same bet structure as the casino version, with the ability to select 1 to 5 gold symbols. How many gold symbols are activated determines how many higher paying symbols you have on the reels, and which jackpot you are eligible for:
- 2 gold symbols: Mini jackpot
- 3 gold symbols: Mini and Minor jackpot
- 4 gold symbols: Mini, Minor and Major jackpot
- 5 gold symbols: Mini, Minor, Major and Grand jackpot
This means to have all 5 gold symbols active yields an 88 cent minimum bet, just like in the physical casino. This is certainly higher than other games that support microbetting, but gives players access to all the pays as a result. But if you want to avoid all the jackpots and focus on the coins, you could play for as little as 8 cents a spin.
It’s worth noting that the progressives are not progressives in the online version, but instead flat prizes that grow proportionally with your bet.
Wild symbols appear on the middle three reels only, but substitute for all symbols, including the bonus symbol.
One thing we’re not too fond of on this game is that the gongs make a noise regardless of whether they’re in a position to trigger the bonus or not. A pretty standard audio rule is that if the bonus symbol can’t be used to trigger a bonus, whether it’s out of position or there won’t be enough, it skips the sound. This didn’t happen here, which is unfortunate.
Fu Bat Jackpot Feature
Whenever a wild symbol appears, fu bats will carry coins up to the pot. The pot can then close, which if it does yields the Fu Bot Jackpot feature.
This is a predetermined picking bonus that will yield one of the jackpots. The jackpots you are eligible for are based on the gold symbols active, as noted above. The outcome is weighted towards the Mini.
The online version with its proportional jackpots will be slightly different than the physical casino one, which has the same jackpots at all levels. At a physical casino, your odds of closing the pot increases with bet, because the prizes relative to your bet are smaller. Online, the odds will be the same, given the jackpots are proportional to the bet.
Free Games Feature
The free games are triggered when at least three gong bonus symbols appear on adjacent reels starting from the left. Wild symbols do substitute for the bonus.
No matter how many bonus symbols you get to trigger the bonus (as long as you get at least one on each of the first three reels), you get 10 free spins. Poker symbols are removed, and the number of gold symbols you had active in the base game carries over to the bonus. With more than half the core pay table symbols removed, it increases the chances considerably for good line hits.
The bonus can be retriggered, and the Fu Bat Jackpot feature can also be achieved in the free games.
