Aristocrat gets a lot of things right, but when it comes to Buffalo Gold Collection, they got about as close to perfection as you can get. They took a classic game, Buffalo, upped the bets, but gave players access to an upgraded bonus and some multipliers in the base game to return the favor.
The result is one of the best bonus chases around – the idea of getting 15 gold buffalo heads is a slot bucket list item for so many players because of the absolute insanity that occurs when it happens. The game has been around almost a decade, but people still look for this game in casinos because of its potential.
Let’s take a look at why this game works so well, and where you can go online to play it!
Base Game
The game shares all of the core traits with its progenitor, Buffalo, in that it’s a 5×4 reel set with 1,024 ways to win thanks to its Xtra Reel Power (all ways pays) format.
The bet increments for this game have increased 50 percent over the original Buffalo, from 40 credits to 60 credits, which has carried online. So you’re looking at 60 cent spins vs. 40 cents as a minimum bet.
The line pays remain the same from the original Buffalo as well, so you’re paying 50 percent more per spin. Despite that, you get rewarded in key ways, such as multipliers now can appear on wilds on the base game, which can help amp up pays and take the edge off while looking for a bonus.
And, because Buffalo invested in the line pays to begin with, you’re still getting a decent 5x your win on any Buffalo five of a kind, with which the all-ways-pays format can stack up fast. So there’s money to be found out there.
Multipliers attach to any win, whether or not the wild is part of the winning combination, and Buffalos pay for as little as appearing on two reels. Wilds only appear on the middle three reels.
Gold Bonus Feature
Three or more coins trigger the Gold Bonus Feature. The number of spins you start with are based on the amount of coins that trigger the bonus:
- 3 Gold Coins: 8 free spins
- 4 Gold Coins: 15 free spins
- 5 Gold Coins: 25 free spins
During the free spins, all wilds have either a x2 or x3 multiplier. Three wilds in the three middle reels mean up to a 27x multiplier is possible.
Retriggers are possible with as little as 2 coins, which add 5 free spins. Three or more coins add the same number of spins as listed above for an original trigger.
The other main addition is the concept of 15 gold buffalo heads, added to the reels at the start of the bonus. As you collect heads, other animal heads convert to buffalo heads:
- 4 Gold Heads Collected: Eagles turn to Buffalo
- 7 Gold Heads Collected: Cougars turn to Buffalo
- 13 Gold Heads Collected: Wolves turn to Buffalo
- 15 Gold Heads Collected: Elk turn to Buffalo
In the event all 15 heads are collected, all the semi-premium animal heads will then be Buffalo heads, meaning the pays ramp up pretty fast. But even at the 13 heads level, it gets pretty darned good.
Gold buffalo heads also serve as Buffalo symbols, so they’re not blockers, but indeed can actually assist with payouts.
