Fu Dao Le has been a mainstay on casino floors for awhile now, with the Light & Wonder game showing strong staying power. The ability to get sizable line hits, bonuses with frequent retriggers and the chance to pick a big jackpot, means it checks a lot of boxes for players. The game has successfully made its way to online casinos.
Let’s take a look at the key features of Fu Dao Le, and where you can play it with real money online!
Fu Dao Le Base Game
This is an all ways pays game with 243 ways to win on a 5×3 reel set. The game features unusual bet increments; the original casino game had all choices that ended in 8, whereas online there are more choices (including bigger choices), but more than half don’t end in 8. The minimum bet remains 38 cents, in line with the game’s norm in casinos.
One thing that bothers me about the online translation is that the spinning music plays out before the reels do, and you can’t move it along. It makes for very slow spinning that disrupts the normal pace of play many of us players do. I do find myself moving along from this one more often because of it.
The game features four premium symbols, 6 poker symbols, the wild and the Wonus symbol (no, that’s not a typo), and the symbols are stacked on reels, which can bring together some good line hits. Along with serving as the bonus triggering symbol, in this game the Wonus symbol is also wild.
Mystery Stacked Reel
There’s also a Mystery Stacked Reel reveal on the reels that opens up at the conclusion of the spin. These are all the same symbol, so enough of the mystery symbol in the right places can yield some significant line hits, which is one of the allures of this game.
Wilds and bonus symbols don’t appear under the mystery stacks – only the premium and poker
symbols.
Red Envelope Bonus
Landing a red envelope on reels 1 and 5 will instantly award the Red Envelope bonus. Because online prizes are set as a proportion to the bet instead of as a progressive, the envelope bonus will go off about as often on any bet level, unlike on the casino version where your chances improve with higher bets.
Expanding Wild
On reel 3 there is a ribbon with a stack of wild symbols. If any part of it appears on reel 3, it will shift to fill the third reel. Coins will then fly up and give you a shot at triggering a progressive pick.
Jackpot Bonus Feature
If a progressive pick is triggered, 15 symbols appear on the screen. There are four jackpots available in this predetermined pick, and you will pick until three matching symbols are revealed.
Here, too, the jackpots shift along with your bet, so your chances of triggering this feature are the same, unlike on the physical casino version, where your chances increase with bet and the prizes are the same progressives at any bet level.
Free Games Feature
Three Wonus symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 will trigger the Free Games Feature. In it, you start with 8 free spins. You also are guaranteed 2x your bet as part of the trigger, and a line hit given the three Wonus symbols are also wild, so you never get nothing on this bonus!
2x and 3x wild ribbons appear on reel 3, to increase the chances of getting a wild but also multiplying the win. Wilds appear on reels 2, 3 and 4, but the Wonus symbols shift to reel 5 and not only continue to act as wilds, but each Wonus symbol landed adds an additional spin to the bonus. So, on any given spin, if you get three Wonus symbols on reel 5, that’ll add three spins to the bonus.
As such, there’s no other retrigger mechanism. Red Envelopes and the Jackpot Bonus feature are out of play too; the Expanding Wild ribbon also sits out for the duration of the bonus.
