Gold Fish is a venerable line of slots, but the more recent iterations under the Gold Fish Feeding Time series have shifted the game from one where random features regularly come out to the fish being used for various free spin bonus upgrades. Still, it was successful, which led to a brand extension, Gold Fish Feeding Time Treasure Deluxe.
This new version ups the ante by helping to upgrade the bonuses with easier chances to trigger multiple upgrades. But if you’re playing online, the game you will encounter will not match the one you find on casino floors, particularly around the bonus.
Let’s explore the online version of the slot, and where you can play it.
Base Game
The base game has a lot of familiarity with the one in casinos. The reels are an unusual 6×5 reel set with double tall wilds and even taller stacked fish symbols. The online game features 50 lines.
One place you can see a difference is bet levels. Where bet levels start with 80 cent increments in physical casinos, you can bet as little as 20 cents here, a tip of the hat to lower betters.
Up to two fish symbols can appear on the reels in each spin out of the three. There’s also three middle pay table symbols and four poker symbols, along with the wilds. There’s also fish food shakers, which can be single colors matching the three fish at the top, or multi-color, which connect to multiple fish.
This is one of those three pot style games, so any one or more shakers can cause one or more fish bowls to break open and trigger a bonus.
Light & Wonder games often feel sluggish, and this is no exception – on winning line hits it counts through them one by one, locking out the spin button. You have to hit stop, wait 1-2 seconds for the amounts won to fade away, and only then can you spin. It’s an ongoing weakness in how they make games relative to other providers and serves to make the games feel less fun, at least to us.
Free Spins Bonus
This is where the game diverges from the physical casino. There’s only one bonus here, structured similarly to the Gold Fish bonus in the casinos. The number of spins you get depend on which fish are unlocked:
- Red fish: 6 spins
- Green fish: 8 spins
- Gold fish: 10 spins
If you get more than one fish, the bonus adds the number of spins together. So getting green and gold would yield 18 spins, for instance.
Above the reels during the free spins are coins that rotate. What can appear on the coins also varies based on the fish that triggered the bonus:
- Red fish: Additional spins
- Green fish: Wilds added to the reels for that spin
- Gold fish: One of four flat jackpot prizes that change proportionally with your bet
The wheel is gone, so really it’s all about what’s happening on the reels and with the coins. Shakers (no matter what color) award one of the two sides of the coin, no matter what color. So you can’t trigger another bonus within the bonus like you sometimes can on the in-casino version.
Some of the coin prizes can get up there, however – we saw (and won) 30x and 40x credit prizes in rare but achievable situations, so the money has shifted around in the bonus from bigger line hits from some of the upgrades the physical casino version offered to the coins here.
During one Super Bonus where the green and yellow fish triggered together, we even saw a Major jackpot during our review of the game!
It’s very much a playable game in its own right. But those looking for the same game experience they find in physical casinos will likely be disappointed. But those who are open-minded to a different game experience will still find this an enjoyable take on it, if not wholly faithful to what it’s based on.
