Aristocrat’s Gold Stacks 88 series has been a mainstay of casino floors online, and now variations of the series are making their way to online casinos. Gold Stacks 88 Lunar Festival is among the first to make the leap.
Let’s look at what makes these games so popular, and where you can play it with real money online.
Base Game
Gold Stacks 88 Lunar Festival is an all ways pays game with a 5×4 reel set. It’s an 88 credit bet increment, just like in casinos, so that means your minimum bet is 88 cents here.
The gold stacks that give the series its name is a mystery symbol that substitutes for one of the higher paying symbols. All of the spaces on these gold stacks will become the same symbol, increasing the opportunity for a decent amount of those symbols to appear and pay many ways at once.
They’re also needed for what’s a pretty busy stack of reels – 6 poker symbols (often clumped to allow for smaller pays in a number of ways to win) and 5 of the premium symbols. The gold stacks are therefore a critical booster to the line hits.
Wild Reels Feature
Wild symbols appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. On some spins, however, they can appear in a special format that will turn the whole reel wild.
This feature can occur during any base game spin, as well as during the free spins.
Jackpot Feature
On any spin where a wild appears, the Jackpot Feature can be triggered. This predetermined bonus pick has you picking for one of four flat jackpot prizes (these are normally progressives in the casino). The first one you pick three of is what you win. Since the prizes change proportionally with your bet, your odds of winning a jackpot is the same on all bet levels.
The wrinkle here is that the first two times you pick a Mini, Minor or Major, bonus credits are added to the total prize won, which is awarded along with the base credit prize if you pick three of that symbol. This bumps up the relative value of them vs. other games with this sort of bonus structure.
Free Games Feature
Three or more gongs on consecutive reels starting from the leftmost reel, triggers the bonus. Regardless of the number of gongs, you get the same volatility choice for free spins (but you do get paid more for more symbols triggering the bonus as a starting amount).
The volatility choice lets you pick from the following:
- 25 free games with 12 wild stacks added
- 15 free games with 24 wild stacks added
- 10 free games with 36 wild stacks added
- 6 free games with 48 wild stacks added
- Mystery choice: One of the four free games counts at random and one of the four wild stack counts at random
With a volatility choice, the less free games with the more wild stacks added, the more volatile the bonus potential – you effectively have less spins to make something happen, but if something does happen the chances are the pay will be better.
The safest choice is the 25 games, and the riskiest choice is mystery, since you could improve your outcome from the four bonuses, or get something worse.
You can’t retrigger the bonus, but the wild stacks added to the reels gain a nudging element, so if a portion of it appears on the reels, it will nudge to reveal a full reel of wild symbols. That, combined with the special wilds that can also expand to fill the reel, increasing the potential for bigger wins with more ways winning.
