AGS has been coming on strong in recent years, and part of their success has come from the popularity of Rakin’ Bacon, and that cute little pig at the top of the screen (that even has a name: Cornsquealius).
The interesting thing is that Rakin’ Bacon is a clone of other themes in the AGS library, with identical game play to games that have been around for a bit. But sometimes the right game and the right theme come together to make magic, and thanks to its popularity brand extensions with new features have followed.
Today we’ll look at the original, which can still be found in many casinos, as well as playable online.
The game play will be familiar to many, as this is AGS’ take on games like 88 Fortunes or Dancing Drums. It’s a 5×3 reel set with all ways pays – no lines, you just need the symbols to stack up on consecutive reels. Stacked symbols give you the chance to win more ways, and get paid more.
Bets are in 88 credit increments, and the game is a single denomination game, with penny denomination being the traditional format, but a dime denomination also available.
Wilds appear on reels 2, 3 and 4, and can be wild for any symbol, including the bonus symbol. Wilds also can randomly trigger the progressive picking bonus.
When triggered, a player enters a predetermined picking round to win one of four progressives, the Mini, Minor, Major or Grand. The chances of winning a progressive when entering this bonus is generally the same, but you get more chances to pick at higher bet levels.
The game can be linked between multiple machines, or be set up individually, so players should check those progressives and sit at the one with the highest numbers, so if you do win a progressive you get the best value for that win.
Three or more bonus symbols on consecutive reels, starting from the first, trigger the free games. As noted before, wilds can substitute for a bonus symbol when they appear on the middle three reels. The number of games available are the same regardless of the number of symbols, but the trigger pay increases with more bonus symbols.
Just like Dancing Drums, you get three choices for the bonus, which effectively is a choice on volatility:
- 15 free games with 5×3 reel set (243 ways to win)
- 10 free games with 5×4 reel set (1,024 ways to win)
- 5 free games with 5×5 reel set (3,125 ways to win)
Effectively the first choice is the least volatile, with more chances to get smaller wins with the shorter set of reels. The last choice is the most volatile, with the least number of chances to get bigger wins given the taller reels.
In the long run, all will average out, but the most volatile choice is going to be much more streaky, with bad bonuses happening more frequently and a giant hit infrequently, but that’s what’s exciting about it for some.
