The Colossal Reels format has been around a long time, with newer variations making their way to casinos in recent years. The Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome slot machine features 100 lines across two reel sets – the main reel set which is 4×5, and the colossal reel set which is 12×5. 25 of the 100 lines is on the main reel set, with the other 75 lines on the colossal reels.
2 lines are assigned to each credit, so a minimum bet with all lines active is 50 credits. But you can opt to go as low as 20 lines, which costs 10 credits. So, a very accessible 10 cents a spin is the absolute minimum, although it’s a 50 cent minimum bet to cover all lines.
There are four suit symbols, four semi-premium symbols and two super tall premium symbols. The symbols are stacked (and super stacked in the case of the highest paying symbols) so when they line up, you tend to pick up a lot of lines, but they can easily get in the way as well.
When a full stack of wilds lands on the main reel set, it carries a full stack of wilds over to the colossal reel set. This can get quite lucrative when you get multiple reels of wilds, particularly towards the front.
Despite the stacked symbols, the high line count, ability to get extra wilds, and the 2 credits per symbol make this a lower volatility option than it would seem at first glance.
Free Spins Bonus
Bonus symbols appear on reels 1, 3 and 5 of both the main and the colossal reel sets and are two spaces tall. You need at least three to trigger the bonus, and they count even if they only partially land within the visible reels.
The number of free spins increases based on the number of bonus symbols, with 8, 12 and 20 free spins awarded when you get 3, for or 5+ bonus symbols on the trigger, respectively.
The main difference is if any wild appears in a reel on the main reel set, that reel will turn wild and carry itself over to the same reel on the colossal reel set – that increases the chances the wilds can do something special.
