One of the more prevalent threads we’ve seen from players is that they think casinos are taking their money faster because they’ve set paybacks lower, especially after the pandemic. The data hasn’t borne this out, and we’ve shared some of this previously on the site.
But on occasion, a data point comes out that illustrates exactly what we’re talking about. This particular data point came from posts from Eilers & Krejcik Gaming, which surveyed casinos about a data point that average minimum bets on core video (not premium) slots between 2021 and 2025 had grown from 60 cents to 80 cents, with some machines breaking the $1 threshold.
That’s a 33 percent increase in a few years, and an acceleration of minimum bets in recent years. With casinos also being more aggressive in replacing older machines in the aftermath of the pandemic, this also means less machines with those lower minimum bets than before.
Of course, some games with lower minimum bets (Dragon Link, Ultimate Fire Link, and so on) will live on with bets at 50 cents or below, more lower budget players may find themselves boxed out of the new and modern slots hitting the floors today.
These higher prices do unlock opportunities for the game makers to spread money into dynamic and engaging features that simply aren’t possible on lower bets, so there’s certainly a reason that can be good for players. And casinos aren’t setting slots materially lower in payouts than they were a few years ago.
But if the amount you bet doubles, and the payback remains the same long term as a percentage, you’re going to spend your money twice as fast, on average, because you’re betting twice as much as you would have on a different machine.
For those with smaller budgets, your money can blow away faster than ever, risking you run out of money before getting any wins to help take the edge off. That can make gambling a less fun experience for some, and indeed we hear from people who are finding gambling less enticing nowadays.
Add to that other changes, like faster spins and higher volatility, and casinos can make more money off the same slot count and without changing paybacks.
It’s a double edged sword. Many players indicate they enjoy the higher upper-end range of bonuses that can really pack a punch, thanks to the more volatile games and the scenarios that volatility allows. But on the other hand, it can be a much more punishing ride to get there.
There’s a lot of slots where much of the money is found in the bonuses. If a bonus proves elusive, it can be a quick flame out session. And that’s helped along by the higher per-spin bet requirements these newer machines are requiring.
The days of being able to go to the casino with $100 haven’t ended, but it’s certainly become harder to make such a trip last long enough to get a good entertainment value. Game choice is a huge part of the success or failure nowadays, and a significant portion has to do with the per-spin bet options.

Well now, that’s why I enjoy watching you lose your money than me actually losing mine. I don’t have to trust the casino, I just trust you will keep on gambling and the games will keep on being rude! Luv ya!
We hear from a lot of viewers that they live vicariously through Brian and his play, and that’s perfect – we’re here to entertain!
Inflation has hit all aspects of our daily lives and this includes all forms of entertainment. This includes the casinos and their customers. Learn to pace your play so you don’t burn through your budget within a short time of arrival. Take breaks. Learn the games and their payouts by watching the YouTube videos or reading the rules on the machines. (Yes, we are all guilty of not reading the rules on the machines first) Here are some suggestions:
Adjust to the speed of the machines. If you find yourself going as fast as the machine is going , slow down perhaps by counting to 10 between spins or allowing the machine go through its programmed line hit music before hitting the spin button again. Find a method that works for you.
Take a break. Could be by going to get a beverage or snack, using the facilities, or socializing with friends.
Come prepared by watching BC videos and researching. Know the games you are about to play and what their payouts are. As BC says, it only takes one spin to win. Knowing the games you play might help you extend your time at that game.
It is up to you, as the customer, on how much money you spend or how much time you spend at a casino but learning to adjust is the key to enjoying your time spent at that casino.
Great suggestions Cheryl – thank you!
One of my issues is too many variation of some slots such as Buffalos with lot lower chance of winning, my go to was Buffalo Gold, notice “was” as you can’t find them any more now it is with trains and other objects and pay off lot less frequency.
The Buffalo series is popular, so they keep releasing new ones, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a place on the casino floor for the earlier variations! We’re happy to report Buffalo Gold was released on updated cabinets so casinos could keep them on the floor, so be sure to tell your casino you’d like them to bring them back – they may very well be able to!
