We are quickly approaching the NBA All-Star Game, marking the unofficial conclusion of the first half of the 2025-26 season. With the trade deadline just over two weeks away, teams will be making their final moves to gear up for a postseason run.
While teams are busy making those last-minute adjustments, the betting market has already adjusted. What inferences can we make based on the current market data?
Futures Market Betting on a Repeat
The Oklahoma City Thunder dispatched the Indiana Pacers in last year’s NBA Finals, and the betting market is bullish on an OKC repeat. As it stands, the Thunder are short +125 favorites to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy for the second straight year.
Predictably, OKC’s surge up the future board is corroborated by some of the best metrics in the league. They rank top four in offensive efficiency, and continue to boast the best defensive metrics across the NBA. Anchored by the best record, it’s no surprise that the Thunder are commanding a significant market share.
Specifically, 13.4% of tickets are being written on Oklahoma City to win it all. Still, that pales in comparison to their betting handle. They are collecting 22.2% of the total money wagered, highlighting the insane amount of big-money wagers that are coming in on the Western Conference leaders.
Thunder Not Alone
As pronounced as the Thunder’s movement is, there are several other teams nipping at their heels. The Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, and Detroit Pistons have seen some of the more notable moves up the NBA Championship board.
Injuries have been a factor for the Nuggets in recent weeks. Nikola Jokic hasn’t played since the end of December, but that hasn’t prevented Denver from collecting a massive share of the futures market. The Nuggets have moved from +1600 to +600, albeit on the strength of public perception. Their 13.2% handle comes in below their 13.4% ticket count, reflecting smaller wagers.
Likewise, Joe Public has sought betting refuge with the better-than-expected Pistons. Detroit’s line has moved significantly, going from +6600 longshots at the start of the season to +1500 this week. A massive jump that looks more reasonable with the incremental upward shifts week after week. However, the 5.4% handle and 6.3% ticket split suggests that the sharpest bettors are still bearish on Detroit’s chances.
Finally, the Spurs could pose the biggest challenge to the Thunder this season. San Antonio plays a similar brand of basketball as OKC. Their defense-first approach has vaulted them to second in the Western Conference standings, a trait sharp bettors are keen to cash in on. The Spurs’ 9.2% handle is the third-highest mark in the NBA, exceeding their 8.3% ticket count. If there are two teams sharp bettors are rallying behind, it’s the Thunder and Spurs.
Teams Falling by the Wayside
No market analysis would be complete without consideration of which teams have faltered. In that regard, several teams have earned the unflattering distinction of moving down the futures board.
The Golden State Warriors stand out as one of those unfortunate few. The Dubs are trying to cash in on the last of their dynasty years, but the outlook is not promising. After opening as +3000 mid-range options, Golden State has fallen to +8000. Sharp bettors were getting a piece of the Warriors at the outset of the campaign, but the loss of Jimmy Butler has negatively impacted their chances of winning it all.
Similarly, the Cleveland Cavaliers haven’t lived up to expectations. Starting the year as one of the premier contenders, the Cavs have fallen from +700 to +3000. The Eastern Conference is a wide-open field, especially once we get into the playoffs. But with only 4.3% of tickets and 3.7% of handle, there are only a handful of casual bettors rallying behind the Cavaliers.
Inarguably, the Dallas Mavericks stand out as one of the biggest disappointments of the 2025-26 season. Their chances of competing were never great, but going from +3500 to +50000 on the futures board is a true indictment of the state of the franchise.
Final Thoughts – Positioned for Long-Term Success
The most important tool in a bettor’s repertoire is being positioned for long-term success. And, there are more than a few ways to skin a cat in this industry. Some bettors will cast a wide net with their futures portfolio, looking for hedging opportunities throughout the postseason. Others are more inclined to maximize bet size based on a soft price or a measurable advantage based on analytical input.
Wherever you fall on the betting spectrum, make sure that your position is defensible and you’re leaving the door open to adjust before the market corrects.
