Prop Bets open up sports betting to some potentially unusual or weird options, but that can add to the fun!
Prop (Proposition) Bets: Just About Anything Else
If the other bet types aren’t enough excitement for a bettor, then prop (proposition) bets may be for you. Prop bets are effectively wagers that don’t have to do with the outcome of the game, but on other aspects of it.
Prop pets can let you bet on a variety of types of data-driven possibilities, such as:
- Which team scores first in a game
- An individual player’s point tally (more common in higher-scoring sports like basketball)
- How many home runs are hit in a baseball game
- How much an individual team scores
Props can be structured in various ways:
- Game props: Bets related to a game, outside the outcome itself
- Team props: Bets related to a single team within a game
- Player props: Bets related to a single player within a game
- Novelty props: These bets are just more out there, such as which team will be the first to call a timeout or even how long the national anthem will be. Bet limits will generally be lower because the risk on these on all sides tends to be higher.
The bets themselves take a familiar form, structured like bet types we’ve explored elsewhere in the guide:
- Moneyline: Picking a team that scores first, for instance, will likely be weighted, just as the final score would be, so the odds would be weighted similarly on this type of prop bet.
- Over/Under: Many performance-driven bet types, such as an individual player’s point count, will generally be structured as an Over/Under bet, where you can bet the Over or the Under against the number presented.
- Spreads: Because you’re not betting on the outcome of a game, spreads are less common in this bet type but could pop up on occasion.
These bet types either require more understanding and knowledge (such as betting on individual player stats) or perhaps no knowledge at all (the color of the Gatorade drank that day). As such, it’s generally advised not to tackle until you’re more comfortable with more basic betting types, and have done the appropriate research when it comes to more specific game props.
