What Qualifies You For a Host?

We often see in conversations around casinos and hosts some confusion in how players qualify for one:

I have a question about Casino Hosts. I have been at Chairman level with the Golden Nugget for several years and I am told I do not rate for a Casino Host. My daughter has a casino host and I spend a lot more money there than she does, or I think I do anyways. What does that mean I do not rate? I hope you have the answer because I am a confused 80 year old lady.

A similar question often comes up around offers, and it comes down to a single calculation, often known as average daily theoretical, or ADT (which casino hosts will sometimes refer to as your rating). This differs from the calculation of your tier level, which is often times a full year’s roll up of total play.

With ADT, how much you are expected to spend on a daily basis, on average, is the calculation. With tiers, it’s a roll up of all your play over a window of time.

There are a lot of players who visit the casino a lot and spend a small amount per visit. Because they visit a lot, they can, over the course of a year, collect enough tier credits to hit the top tier of a casino program, but their average visit amount is small.

There are other players who don’t visit as often, but spend a lot when they do. So while they aren’t earning a high tier level, each visit is a pretty big one to the casino in terms of potential earnings value.

Let’s put some numbers against these ideas to dive a bit deeper.

Let’s say player A goes to the casino 10 times a month. Each time they bring $100 to play with, and usually spend that money. Over the course of a month, therefore, they spend $1,000. However, per visit, they spend $100.

Now let’s say player B goes to the casino once a month. Each time they bring $1,000 to play with, and usually spend that money. Over the course of a month, they also spend $1,000. However, per visit, they spend $1,000.

Casinos will be much more excited and interested in Player B. But why, if their value is the same over the course of a month? Well, a few reasons:

  • The casino is counting on the fact that if they get another visit from player A, they’ll make another $100, while from player B they’ll make another $1,000. A visit from player B is 10x more valuable in their calculations.
  • Player A is already visiting quite often – there’s only so much more you’re going to get out of someone who’s already visiting every couple of days. Player B has more room for growth.
  • Finally, Player B, for that $1,000 in spend, uses resources at a lot lower level than player A might. Imagine both players stay overnight each visit – player A needs 10 room nights vs. player B needing just one. Player A needs 10+ meals, player B needs 1-2.

If you’re a host, you’re looking to capitalize on players that have room for growth and add the most value. The ADT calculation therefore is .more important than tier level, and that probably explains why your daughter is hosted and you’re not.

Changing your playing habits to go less often, with a larger budget, could get you a host. But if you go often because it’s an entertainment resource, perhaps the host isn’t worth it to lose all that visitation time.

Unless you’re a really big player it seems like a host can’t really do that much for you. I usually get lots of room offers and I haven’t paid for a meal in a long time. I get show tickets now and then and there’s no one checking my play hoping I will lose. I play baccarat and blackjack and sports and don’t feel obligated to keep playing or sign markers.

That’s a fair point Harris – if all they can do is book your already good offers, it probably isn’t adding much value to begin with. That’s especially true if you’re not looking for anything more than you’ve got!

Still doesn’t make sence to me. My wife and I go together all the time whether once a month or more. We have the same amount to play, she stays on one machine I jump all over. Everything seems even yet she gets hosts, she advances faster in tier, and gets promotions all the time, I get nothing.
