Online casinos work differently than physical ones, because they don’t have the ability to have the players stand in front of them, on camera, when transactions are done like when visiting the cashier. That means a different process has to be followed, and today’s question addresses that aspect:
Would you please explain how being “verified“ works? What are the steps for verification?

Our friends at BetMGM did an article around the concept of “Know Your Customer” for us a few months back. The idea is that casinos have to take steps to ensure they know who they’re working with to be able to accept deposits and issue withdrawals.
The process will vary by casino, but the general idea is they’ll need to verify who you are. This can be done a number of ways, and many times casinos will employ multiple items from this list:
- Ask you questions about your history based on information on your credit report (where you lived, went to school, etc.)
- Request a copy of your license
- Ask for a picture of you with that license
- Request a copy of a recent bank statement or utility bill
- Request a copy of your debit or credit card (if depositing or withdrawing that way)
The general idea is that if you possess these things, know these things, can prove with a picture of you with them that it’s you, it gets as close as you can to confirming who you are without having you there in front of them to validate.
For real money gaming, these steps are generally required by regulation. However, many times these steps also exist for other types of wins, such as sweepstakes wins. Ultimately, it’s for the security of both their service and yourself, to ensure someone’s not pretending to be you.
