Slots are designed in different ways to appeal to different people. Here’s a great example of a question where those differences can matter to certain players:
In your opinion, what game gives the best line hits?
Ron B.
In general, the ones that can deliver the best line hits are the ones that don’t have any bonuses are features. Because all of the pays are therefore anchored in the line hits, they can feel more generous. There’s a few examples of this we can think of off the bat.
Many three-reel mechanical reel slots go this direction – games like Cash Machine and Triple Jackpot Gems by Everi put all their money on the paylines, so there’s no diluting of the pays into special features or bonuses, so it helps quite a bit in terms of the value you can get on those line hits when they arrive.
Another example but in a video reel format is the Twin Win series by IGT don’t have bonuses or features either, and with the double symbols the line hits can get pretty generous as well. But without bonuses or features to pull some of the money away, those hits can come pretty steadily.
As a general trend, line hits have been slowly watered down over time as bonuses increase in importance and potential. So older slots are also a great place to look for opportunities. For instance, the original Buffalo can deliver some pretty sizable wins even with a bonus round with the sort of potential that game series has.
But when you consider the original Buffalo has the same line hit pays as newer Buffalo games but with a much lower bet requirement to qualify for them, it can open the door to some really good payouts relative to your bet.
So those are two directions we’d encourage you to look at – games without bonuses at all, and older games where there’s a design that puts some good weight into the line hits.
