Players notice when certain types of imagery or theming shows up a lot. The past few years, one that’s seemed to surge, although it’s been around in various forms over time, is the concept of the piggies:
Why are pigs such a popular slot graphic?

Generally speaking, a successful game catches the attention of game designers, and if it continues to do well in other forms, game makers may do more of the same.
For instance, games like Rakin’ Bacon, which is a clone of other slots that didn’t do as well, and Piggy Bankin’, part of the Lock It Link series, have shown the players’ excitement towards playing games with cute piggies.

Three fourths of those we polled on Brian Christopher’s YouTube page said they would at least consider slots with a pig theme. One fourth were not pulled in by the character.
As far as the connection to slots, at least the concept of a pig has some connection to playing them because of the idea of piggy banks. Many slot players know of that imagery, and we’re sure some had their own at various points, so the idea of breaking open the piggy bank to capture the cash isn’t a foreign concept to most.
Add in the fact that most of the time the piggy characters happen to be pretty darned cute, and it tends to lend itself to being common in slot theming.
Pigs have also worked there way in through other forms; the Huff N’ Puff series leans on piggy graphics in part because it’s leveraging the concept of the Big Bad Wolf and the three little pigs. That, too, took off, and now there’s a whole barnyard full of Huff N’ Puff series games alone, and that series has in turn inspired other games as well.
So it’s ultimately an alignment of themes that resonate with players, themes that have pigs in their narrative arc, and the success of all these slots that are an indication of why you’re seeing so many of them around.
And while the pig theming is nothing new to slots, they’ve definitely been picking up steam in recent years, given so many hits have had pigs within their concept.
