What’s that slot attendant doing when they come over and need access to a player’s machine all of a sudden?
You are playing a slot machine. You are winning. You don’t press the “service” button or ask for any help. A staff member comes over, asks you to step aside, and opens the machine (for no apparent reason). Then you start losing…..what’s with that? It has happened multiple times to family & friends at different casinos.

A slot attendant can be alerted to a variety of different issues that may lead them to want to take a quick look at the machine. One can be a low paper alert; another can be a recent issue with the door on the slot.
Nowadays, a slot attendant will often get an alert on a device like a phone or iPad that something’s up, and while at some casinos they’ll wait until a machine is clear before changing it, some casinos just want to make sure all is well and so will ask a player to step aside.

Apparently this is a relatively common enough occurrence, as more than three fourths of those polled on Brian Christopher’s YouTube page has reported it happening to them.
You don’t have to hit the service light – the machines are often linked to a network where these alerts can be shared. Or, in the casinos that do it the old fashioned way, they may be tipped off by the candle lights at the top of a machine that lets them know something needs a look.
As far as the winning/losing part, that’s just chance. You’re more often to win than lose on a slot, and we’d guess the circumstances are a relatively low number of times where it happened. If they made any significant changes, the machine would need to fully reload, which can take awhile.
If they just opened the door, checked something/logged something, closed it and it was back to where it was, nothing’s been changed. So no, they’re not there to do anything to your machine because you’re winning – the machines are already designed to make enough money for the casino over time that they expect to get those wins back in the end anyway.
