Sometimes, as players, we’ll look around the casino to see if people are winning anything significant. We’re clearly not the only ones:
When you are at the casino playing and don’t see anyone winning large amounts. Why?
Pam R.
Casinos are big spaces, so it may seem weird that we don’t sometimes see people winning big – there’s a lot of machines, so someone has to be winning, right?
Well, the randomness of things is sometimes a part. But also think about this: How often have you won a big prize such as a Major jackpot? Now figure there’s 500 machines on a casino floor, for instance. If you were winning it 500 times more often, there’d still be a lot of room for nothing happening at a casino that size.
And that presumes every slot is in use – it’s not unusual to be in a half empty casino on a weeknight and not much of anything is going on, in part because there’s not that many people there to begin with.
We sometimes think it’s interesting when you DO see a bunch of somethings happening. You have the machine where someone is waiting for a jackpot handpay, the one where everyone is crowded around watching someone’s bonus, then you hear the jackpot jingle over there…
Our editor was on a cruise of all places when the first night he saw someone win a Dancing Drums Grand jackpot – he had never seen it in person before. The next night he saw someone win a grand on Buffalo Gold Revolution – another super rare hit. After seeing a couple of more grands – when he couldn’t recall the last time he saw one in a casino – he proceeded to then hit his own on a $1 bet.
These events are designed to be super rare, so they’re not going to happen often, But you might also notice it doesn’t take too long to find yourself unable to hear slots a couple of rows away. Even when they’re designed to make a ruckus, the sound’s often directed towards where a person is seated, and it tends to peter out pretty quickly as you move away.
And the final thing to remember is that many times, when we’re playing, we get engrossed in our own slot, not those around us. So it can be easy to miss big wins just by the nature of us being focused on our own journey.
So you may not hear the person winning a jackpot a few rows away, and odds are you wouldn’t be able to see it from that distance either. So another part of it is how casinos are big cavernous spaces, but an individual’s player space is still pretty sheltered from most of the rest of the world despite that.
