4 Things to Do in Galveston, Texas

Galveston, Texas

I always talk with you about casino experiences or what it was like living in Las Vegas. There was a time, however, that I lived in another tourist destination: Galveston, TX.

If you’re not aware, Galveston Island is an eclectic little beach town that comes with a whole lot of character and plenty of things to do.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not a “BOI,” which means Born on Island, but for the better part of a decade I was what they call an “IBC,” or Islander By Choice. I loved walking around downtown in the early morning… plus some late nights, dreaded dealing with the Seawall Kroger parking lot, paid my dues on the beloved “Tipsy Shuttle,” and even cheered on my now husband as he graduated from The University of Texas Medical Branch.

Since I moved away, the island has become more and more popular thanks to more than a few HGTV appearances and the booming cruise port. When I lived there, I could hear the various ship horns from inside my downtown apartment. This wasn’t an issue, because during any given week, there were only a handful of ships coming and going.

Nowadays, however, Galveston has officially become “the fourth most popular cruise home port” in America. With four cruise terminals playing host to Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Disney, the Galveston Port welcomes over four million passengers a year- you may have been one!

Before you plan your next cruising adventure, or even just a day trip, read on below for some of my classic recommendations next time you find yourself on a cruise out of Galveston.

Embrace the History – Galveston Historic Seaport

Bear with me! When you hear “history,” your mind might automatically flash back to boring grade school lessons, BUT that isn’t the type I’m talking about. Galveston Island is steeped in history, some chapters far more depressing than others, but the great thing is- you can choose what to lean into!

Galveston is the one place I’ve lived that comes close to matching the colonial history of my hometown. While Galveston isn’t 1700 hundreds buildings, it does have 1800s tall ships! Unless she is underway, you can normally find the Tall Ship Elissa in the Galveston Historic Seaport. This is a fully functioning ship that offers tours, special events, and even the opportunity to hop on board for special sailings.

The Galveston Historic Seaport is located within walking distance to The Strand. This is a family friend activity with tons of spots to stop along the way for pictures, coffee, and food.

Explore Downtown – The Strand

Remember when I said I could hear the cruise ship horns from my apartment? I wasn’t kidding when I said I lived in Galveston, I lived in the heart of the action, across the street from the port, on The Historic Strand.

For those familiar with the area, I lived right across from the infamous Yaga’s Cafe, and above the jerky and soap store. Coming from the very walkable east coast, I absolutely loved being able to leave my loft and head right across the street to grab a drink or take a stroll to Post Office for some shopping or coffee.

If you’re after sweets, I have two recommendations! I love the candy apples from Rocky Mountain Candy Company but the true local move is to pop over to La Kings Confectionary. La Kings is a true Galveston staple that can be enjoyed by the entire family. In addition to offering ice cream and chocolates, La Kings proudly features taffy demonstrations on certain days (check their website for details). During the demonstration, you can see the traditional way taffy is pulled and even catch a piece of the treat at the end.

Galveston Attractions

Before I officially moved to the island, I worked for a souped up nonprofit called Moody Gardens – it was actually my first real job out of college!

I say “souped up” because Moody Gardens isn’t a traditional nonprofit. It is something I still think you need to experience to understand. The best way I can describe it is a zoo, aquarium, and exhibit area. These general categories are housed in three separate pyramids that you’ve probably noticed if you’ve ever crossed the causeway (the highway leading onto the island from the mainland. Look to your right when crossing onto the island).

The rainforest pyramid took my breath away the first time I walked inside and it was only partly due to the increased humidity. Once you step into the pyramid, you’ll experience a replica rainforest complete with free roaming birds and even a few mammals. You start your journey in the canopy, and work your way down to the ground level all while exploring the various critters and their ecosystems. Keep an eye out for what animals you and your crew can spot, and you can always ask a team member for more info.

Additional attractions include Pleasure Pier, which is a small amusement park… on a pier, Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston, and a mini golf course called Magic Carpet Mini Golf. There is also normal golf at Moody Gardens’ course.

Dining in Galveston

One of the best parts of visiting the island is grabbing a local bite. Whether you’re looking to grab something to eat before or after your cruise, there are tons of options to fit everyone’s tastes and schedule.

Casual

The Spot! The Spot easily snags my recommendation for best casual local eatery with a view. Not only are the burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, and everything else delicious, the atmosphere both inside and out is unmatched. The Spot sits on The Seawall, the main road that runs along the ocean, meaning you can grab a table, enjoy a meal, and watch the waves roll in.

When I worked in Galveston, The Spot consistently won the office vote on where to head for lunch. On the rare occasion where we need to drum up an extra vote to swing it in the direction of beachside chicken sandwiches, I was willing to make some office deadline deals to make it happen.

Special Occasion

Celebrating something special? If you’re hoping to commemorate a life event or celebrate an achievement, you should consider Rudie & Pacos. Rudie & Pacos offers a little bit of everything you’d expect from an upscale restaurant while providing a little extra island charm. The caliber of food is matched by classic elegant atmosphere and amazing table service.

I celebrated my 6-month dating anniversary with my now-husband at Rudie & Pacos. It was a little out of the budget at the time but we knew we wanted to try it out and mark the occasion with a special date.

Outdoor Dining

If you’re like me and enjoy eating outside from time to time, a nice option located right on The Strand is Riondos Ristorante. This is one of my favorite spots to people watch while enjoying a glass of wine or small plate. If it is a little too hot outside, the indoor bar is another cozy spot to watch some island life playout.

Classic

The first time I went to Maceo Spice & Import Company felt like an island right of passage. At the time, the operation was a little smaller and the colorful outdoor sidewalk area was still a little ways out. Now, you can benefit from a gorgeous outdoor area complete with a healthy event schedule.

When it comes to ordering, the muffuletta is the move! It is just the right amount of salty, complemented by the most delicious, fresh bread. These are only available until 5 p.m. so make sure you plan accordingly!

Tap Room

Galveston Island even has its own brewing company fittingly named Galveston Island Brewing Company.

Bonus

I have a confession to make. I LOVE Rainforest Cafe. There’s just something about a fully themed restaurant that I adore… especially if that theme goes full camp and includes animatronics and a timed thunderstorm show. What makes the Rainforest Cafe on the island especially special, is that the Galveston location is the only one with a ride!

That’s right, you not only can enjoy a plate of nachos surrounded by thunderstorm activated gorillas, you can take a ride after! The ride is a floating exhibition, you will board a circular water raft but don’t worry, you won’t get wet. From there, your group will set off on a roughly eight minute journey taking in the sights of an animatronic safari. Before you head home, make sure to check out the gift shop and take a moment to admire the volcano that sits atop the building from the parking lot.
