When you go to a casino, the usual plan is to be there for awhile. But what happens when you win quickly? Today’s comment is a follow-up to Brian Christopher’s recent advice on what to do when you win big at the casino, and is a topic we see many players struggle with:
I don’t like winning a couple hundred right away because I went there to spend some time enjoying playing the slots, not winning, turning around & walking out. Now if I win a handpay (only once ever), I’ll get a check I will end up bringing to my bank to deposit.

On the one hand, we love to have a winning moment at the casino, but on the other hand, locking in that win 5 minutes after arriving, and walking out with it, can have its own letdown moment if you were looking forward to a couple of hours of relaxation at the slots or tables.
So, realizing many players don’t have that interest, or discipline, we have some simple advice. If you win early, put the winnings aside and pretend it didn’t happen. Play with the budget you already planned to play with at the casino. If your budget runs out, or you reach your stop point, you know you’ll be leaving the casino with something.
For players who aren’t confident they have the discipline to simply set the money aside, this is the exact sort of scenario Winners Banks are made for, because you can lock away those wins in a device that can’t be opened until you get home and access the key (because you’re going to leave the key at home and not in your car, right? Right?!).
This approach offers a fair balance – you already had planned a certain amount for your casino trip, which at this point is likely most if not all still there, and you can put aside winnings that ensure that the day wasn’t a complete wipeout. But you’re not spending any more money than you had originally planned.
This, along with other steps you can take such as setting decision points vs. throwing a big ticket into a machine, can be a great way to calibrate your visit and reduce the risk of going home empty handed.
