It seems like some players get handpays all the time, while others have never had one. Some players wonder what they can do:
How can I win big? I don’t seem to ever have enough to bet high.
Jermaine B.
We hear you, Jermaine. Our lead writer here at Flip The Switch traditionally is not a big bettor, but has had some pretty amazing moments over the years:
- A $840 Major jackpot on 88 cents bet on Dancing Drums
- A $950 Major jackpot on 88 cents on Da Ji Da Li
- A $1,300 major on a $1.76 bet on Gold Stacks 88
- A $12,500 grand on a $1 bet on Eureka Reel Blast
- A $2,150 grand on a $2 bet on Duo Fu Duo Cai Grand Ingotcha
- A $1,250 win on a $1.25 bet on Buffalo Keno
- Four $1,000 Royal Flushes on a $1.25 bet on Video Poker
What do all of these have in common? All were $2 a spin or less, with a number at $1 or less a spin. So can you get a significant win on smaller bets? Yes.
The counterpart to that aspect of things is that games with these types of payouts can be harder to win on overall. So while pursuing these really big wins, you can also lose more money because a percentage of the payouts are assigned to these really big numbers, which end up getting won by a single person.
The reality is gambling is a losing sport – the games are designed to make money for the casino over time. So chasing big wins by betting high or playing tough games will only serve to burn your money faster.
We always advised players to set goals that are realistic for their budget. That means not going into a casino with $100 with the goal of a handpay. 100x bonuses at any bet level is an exciting moment, even if that’s a $20 bonus on a 20 cent bet.
Games can warp our perspective because there’s those giant progressives, but the reality is that they don’t pay that often. A bank of Lightning Link games will award one Grand a month, on average – not necessarily the best odds for any given player.
So if you want to swing for the fences, pick games that give you the chance to win a big prize at any bet level, and be realistic about the chances of that happening. And most importantly, remember that this should be a fun experience, and if it’s not, perhaps a break is in order so you can recalibrate.

Thanks Dave for stopping by, reading and leaving a comment!
I have not won in years! I use to be pretty lucky, I won $7200 and won a car, now I’m in a BIG slump! Most I win now if I’m lucky is like maybe $40.
Those are some pretty big wins Greg, so we hope the tides turn for you and you put another nice win on the board!
