The roulette wheel is seemingly laid out in a random way, in that there’s no obvious pattern to the numbers at first glance. A player had some questions about it:
Are all Roulette wheels the same, in regards to where each number is placed? Also how were the placement of the numbers on the wheel determined?

If you’re talking the same game (such as American Roulette), the wheel layout is stable from one casino to the other. But between variations of roulette, such as European Roulette vs. American Roulette, the layouts are different, in part because of the differing number of total numbers.
You’ll notice a red/black pattern (minus the green spaces) on the wheel. When you look at the betting layout of a roulette table, it’s not a fully checkerboard scenario – the pattern flips at a few points. This is to ensure there’s an equal number of red and black spaces covering odd and even, so betting red or black is different than betting odd or even.
Similarly, the Roulette wheel is laid out in a way to have a mixture of high and low, odd and even, red and black. Visually the red and black are alternated, but the numbers themselves are also laid out to spread things out across the wheel.
In this way, no matter where the ball is coming to a stop on the wheel, if you’re betting red or black odd or even, high numbers or low numbers, one of the thirds, there’s a chance the number the ball lands could align with your bet.
Betting an inside number or group of numbers will of course be harder to achieve, but even if you’re placing a corner bet on four numbers, those will be spread around the wheel as well.
So not every roulette wheel is laid out identically, but generally speaking, specific types of roulette share a layout (and usually, rules), so one American Roulette table will have matching rules with that same game at other casinos. This ensures familiarity and consistency for the player.
On the rare case rules differ, it will tend to be on electronic tables and revolving around payouts. So it’s always good to confirm the payouts are correct for the version of Roulette you’re playing before diving in. But otherwise, you should feel pretty confident that you know what to expect based on the number of green spaces on the Roulette wheel.
