The slot machine Double Top Dollar has stood the test of time, and was updated in recent years to serve a new generation of players.
On 3 occasions I have played Double Top Dollar. Twice I hit the Top Dollar bonus playing a single line, $5 denom max bet was 3 credits. So $15 per spin I hit $150 and $225. And one time playing $10 denom 2 credit max bet $20 per spin and it only paid $300. All 3 times I hit it said don’t take an offer 3 times in a row and the payout I got at the end was the highest. Is that normal for that to be such a low payout in a high limit room? 15x the bet?

As an older slot, Double Top Dollar isn’t as volatile as many of today’s slots are, so the more frequent bonuses that are 10-15x your bet isn’t unusual. But one thing to consider about the structure of Double Top Dollar is that the last credit is what fuels the bonus. So on a $5 denomination machine that last $5 is what pays for the bonus.
When seen through that filter, that $150 and $225 is now 30x and 45x (and that $300 win on the 2 credit machine was also 30x), given the money wagered on the first 1-2 coins unlocks the rest of the pay table. So that can be part of the reason why you don’t see frequent massive wins – most of the distribution of bonuses are based on that one credit contribution.
Another thing to keep in mind is Double Top Dollar mathematically recommends to Take Offer or Try Again based on the odds of improving from your current offer, given how many remaining offers you have. It’s not a guarantee, but mathematically the best play.
Double Top Dollar has been on casino floors for decades, at a time when a 25x bonus was considered good. High limit machines traditionally had some volatility to them (that 1,000 credit top prize, with the multiplier, is there for a reason) but most of the offers are designed to fall into a certain range.
A newer version of the series, Triple Double Top Dollar, will offer a larger top prize, but we also learned that there will be a bigger range in the distribution of the various offers, including an increased chance of the 1,000 credit (without the multiplier) offer level.
So while the classic game remains a staple, newer versions will open the doors to those looking for higher risk and potentially higher reward, not unlike many slots and how they’re evolving over their predecessors.
