We are on the eve of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Countries have been busy gearing up for the triannual event, testing their mettle against MLB Spring Training and NPB competition in Japan.
At the same time, incoming money continues to shape the WBC betting markets. From group winners, tournament champion, game lines, and WBC MVP, sharp and public sentiment is impacting the early direction of this year’s offering.
The sparing gloves are about to come off, as these teams deliver another memorable WBC. Let’s assess the groups, tournament champion, and MVP markets.
Group A – San Juan
Inarguably, Group A is the most wide-open bracket in the tournament. Just over 1200 betting points separate favorite Puerto Rico (-110) from Panama (+1100), the longest odds on the board. The winner of this group will be determined by which team can execute, and in that regard, we could see an unexpected upset.
The rest of the competitors in this group are Canada (+330), Colombia (+500), and Cuba (+700). If not for the defectors, Cuba would have had a legitimate chance of upending the round robin. However, we’re not looking past a deep Canadian team loaded with MLB talent.
Canada boasts five starting pitchers with MLB experience and a power-laden batting order. Don’t be surprised if they catch Puerto Rico off-guard and vault to the top of the Group A standings.
Group B – Houston
Of the five teams in Group B, four of them will be battling it out for second place. The tournament-favorite Americans are poised to run roughshod over their round robin foes, en route to a deep playoff run.
Not surprisingly, Team USA enters as prohibitive -650 favorites to win Group B. Their closest competitor is Mexico, albeit at a distant +600. From an implied probability perspective, that represents a 72-point drop from USA’s 86.7% implied probability to Mexico’s 14.3%.
Italy (+1800), Brazil (+5000), and Great Britain (+5000) are just happy to be there, and it’s unlikely any will contend with the big dogs in this group.
Group C – Tokyo
Group C features a quartet of Eastern world countries, albeit one of whom comes from Europe’s Eastern bloc. Japan is the presumptive favorites, but if its warm-up matches were any indication, it could face some unexpected resistance from the other unsuspecting countries.
Priced with the second-shortest odds to win the World Baseball Classic, Japan dropped a heartbreaking walk-off loss to the NPB Orix Buffaloes earlier this week. That precipitated some betting apprehension, as they’ll face similar competition from Korea (+800) and Chinese Taipei (+950) in the round robin. Ultimately, the winner of this group will be determined by which team collects the most victories out of these key matchups.
Australia (+1800) and Czechia (+5000) round out the group, but lack the experience and firepower to compete with their Asian counterparts.
Group D – Miami
Finally, Group D is shaping up to be a two-horse race. The winner between the Dominican Republic (-210) and Venezuela (+170) will likely take top spot in the group.
We’re not discounting the DR’s chances in this one. They feature one of the deepest lineups in the tournament, with All-Star and MVP candidates sprinkled throughout their roster. These teams close out the round robin on March 11, and bettors should plan their positions carefully ahead of that showdown.
The Netherlands (+1600), Nicaragua (+5000), and Israel (+5000) are throwaways in this group. But if the Dutch could pull off one massive upset, it could upend the entire direction of the playoffs.
World Baseball Classic Tournament Champion
To no one’s surprise, the lion’s share of the betting action is coming in on Team USA to claim its second title in three tournaments. They have moved from +140 to -110 on the strength of 34.7% of the tickets and 33.8% of the handle.
Leading up to their recent loss, the Japanese were one of the preferred landing spots for sharp investment. Their tournament-leading 41.7% handle is significantly ahead of their 24.7% ticket count, representing a seismic amount of action. Still, we’re seeing reverse line movement, with Japan going from +300 to +350, signaling BetMGM’s intent to draw in more money on Japan.
Lastly, the Dominican Republic has become the public darling in this year’s WBC. They are collecting a robust 23.1% ticket count, supported by just 15.7% of the betting handle.
Japan represents the biggest liability for BetMGM, with the Americans and Dominicans following closely.
Tournament MVP
There are some decided favorites in group play and tournament champion markets, but the MVP market is flush with value. At +750, Aaron Judge represents the shortest odds on the board; however, many bettors are seeking higher odds with other players further down the list.
Most notably, Bobby Witt Jr. leads the ticket and handle count. His 26.0% handle exceeds his 23.8% ticket count, implying an influx of sharp money. Likewise, Juan Soto’s 11.5% handle outpaces his 10.7% handle, indicating he’s another sharp-backed candidate in the WBC.
Standing at +2200 and +3000, respectively, both players could yield profitable payouts if they perform as expected.
Final Thoughts
The popcorn is ready and the wagers have been placed. We’re setting our sights on two weeks of intense World Baseball Classic action as we gear up for MLB Opening Day. Follow the action closely, and be ready to adapt your betting strategies, as this could be one of the more memorable tournaments in recent history.
