It is officially spring, which means the Major League Baseball season is right around the corner.
The season will get underway on Wednesday, March 25, with one game, but the real Opening Day is Thursday, March 26, when the majority of teams get their seasons started.
There are a number of season-long bets to be made before the season starts. These markets are available throughout the season, but change based on the results.
Here’s a look at some of them, along with some insights from the BetMGM online sportsbook.
World Series Odds
This market is picking the World Series winner.
As of March 20, the Dodgers have the best odds at +225, followed by the Yankees at +1000 and then the Mariners and Blue Jays at +1400.
At BetMGM, the Dodgers are the most popular pick, with 17.4% of the bets and 41% of the money. The second-most bet team is the Blue Jays, with 10.6% of the bets and 11.4% of the money.
Division Odds
This market is selecting the winner for each division. For example, the Yankees are +180 to win the AL East. If they are the division champion, this bet would be a winner.
As of mid-March, Seattle is the most popular division winner. At -105, they are taking in 54.7% of the bets and 98.8% of the money to win the AL West. Earlier this year, a BetMGM bettor wagered $300,000 on the Mariners to win the division at +100 odds.
Playoff Odds
This market is whether or not a team will make the playoffs. It doesn’t matter whether they win their division or are one of the wild card teams. You can bet whether a team will make the playoffs or miss the playoffs.
At BetMGM, the most popular teams to make the playoffs in terms of number of bets are the Pirates (+275), White Sox (+1000) and Royals (+135). The most popular teams to miss the playoffs in terms of number of bets are the Astros (+125), Reds (-165) and Padres (-105).
Win Totals
This market is betting the Over/Under on the number of wins for a specific team. For example, if someone bet the Over Red Sox win total of 87.5, and they finish with 88 or more, the bet would be a winner.
At BetMGM, the most Over bet win total teams in terms of number of bets are the Pirates (78.5 games), White Sox (67.5) and Rockies (54.5). The most popular Under bet win total teams in terms of number of bets are the Yankees (90.5), Dodgers (103.5) and Guardians (79.5).
