Slot machines give players all sorts of choices. What sort of bet levels are you looking for? Do you prefer reels or video slots? What sort of bonuses draw you in?
If those choices weren’t enough, a growing number of games let players choose between bonus options. The idea is you can choose between an easier bonus or a harder bonus. Easier bonuses are usually a smoother ride, offering more smaller pays but are less likely to outright disappoint. Harder bonuses will have less spins and bigger multipliers or reels, so the odds of winning something aren’t as good, but if you do, it could be massive.
This is effectively a choice around how volatile a bonus you wish to have, and as players we all have different risk appetites.

When we asked players on the Brian Christopher Slots YouTube channel what they prefer, almost 4 in 10 said they prefer a safer choice, while 2 in 10 preferred a tougher, but potentially more lucrative, choice. Another 14% chose the toughest of all – the mystery choice. And a quarter of you mix it up.
Here’s a most definitely incomplete list of games you can play that have the ability to choose a bonus. We’ll periodically update this list as new games come out (and as we remember others that belong here too):
- Dancing Drums: There’s five choices, including a mystery pick, on each game of this series. Various brand extensions offer some additional upgrades that can push the volatility up even further.
- Cash Fortune Deluxe has a set of choices with spin and reel height choices.
- The original Rakin’ Bacon has only three choices, which align similarly to the first three choices on Dancing Drums.
- Buffalo Deluxe lets you pick between three bonuses that have different spin and multiplier amounts.
- Ultimate Fire Link: China Street and River Walk versions have a set of free games/multiplier combos, and also a mystery choice.
- 5 Dragons: All versions let you choose the number of games and multipliers that are paired with it. Some newer versions also incorporate a mystery choices
- 5 Frogs: Based off the 5 Dragons model, you can choose from the five different bonuses, or choose Mystery and it will pull a free games and multiplier stack from the choices.
- 5 Elemental Legends: This Konami game has four choices with games and multiplier options, along with a mystery choice that chooses between the four of each. Shikibu is a clone with the same options.
- Sky Rider: This game and its sequels have a set of choices of stacked symbols and free games, or you can pick mystery that will select from within the ranges of free games and the symbol choices.
- Gold Pays: Many of Aristocrat’s Gold Pays series of games, such as Golden Princess and Lunar Festival, have a set of free games and wilds on reels choices, along with that dreaded mystery option.
- Lucky 88: This old school game has picks between a range of free games and a multiplier range as well.
And because we get asked this a lot – yes, your choice does matter! Just because all of the options will average out to the same payback in the long run, an individual bonus can go any sort of way. So still think about it within the realm of what sort of risk you wish to take on that specific bonus.
