Many modern slot machines have lights surrounding the displays. One player wonders if those give any hint as to what’s coming:
Is there any truth that a machine is about to hit when the light (surrounding the cabinet on the outside of the screen) is flashing red versus flashing green, yellow, or other colors?

The lights around a screen are set based on the game and the control of them will generally be based on what’s happening in the game.
On occasion, the lights will tell you something’s about to happen just before it happens, but that will take place after a spin has already begun and a wager placed. Lights will not be an indicator of what’s going to happen before a wager has been made, just like the pots won’t tell you if a bonus is approaching.
If a game has a special indicator that you’re building to something, game makers will go out of their way to make sure players know about it. Certain games in the casino have things like must hit by progressives, progressive free games, spin cycles (think of games like Scarab) and so on that put the information front and center for players to know what’s going on.
They don’t hide hints in things like pots or light packaging, as these are just design elements to help make a game feel more engaging. They won’t convey information in an indirect way.
So when it comes to the lights around the game, you won’t be able to tell from a machine that a bonus is coming before a wager is made. It may give you an indication as one is occurring, but that would be after you’ve already begun the spin, and at that point the outcome is already established, so it’s not really much help at that point.
