Must Hit By progressives are unique among progressives in that they must be awarded by the time they reach a certain number. One player asks:
On slots that have a “must hit by” progressive, is that next number determined as soon as it hits or just goes off randomly?

As it turns out, both methods have been employed in Must Hit By progressives in the past. Based on our conversations with manufacturers, it’s more common that the number is selected at the time it resets after a hit.
But there are definitely examples of ones where it can be awarded, for instance, on any win or spin. In the latter case, the game will generally express this prominently (the G+ Deluxe line of games by WMS a decade ago was a good example of this).
From a player’s perspective, the practical implications of either approach shouldn’t yield too much of a difference. The fact that it has to be awarded at a certain point will put an upper limit on when it will be awarded, but in most implementations it means it can be awarded just about anywhere on the range.
Of course, as the range tightens, the probability of it going off sooner increases, simply because the meter doesn’t have as far it can move before being awarded.

About three fourths of players polled will at least sometimes play slots with Must Hit By progressives, according to a poll conducted on Brian Christopher’s YouTube page, so many of you do pay attention to this.
One example where the design diverges is AGS’ implementation of these progressives on games like River Dragons. There is a definite weighting of the numbers in the upper part of the range, especially in the last few dollars, which makes it less enticing to pursue vs. others when it begins to approach the top end of the range.
On games where the range is balanced, it can yield some interesting outcomes. We were witness to two back to back Stage 3 Progressive wins on Brian Christopher’s Pop’N Pays More at an event awhile back. The progressives went off pretty much back to back, which just shows it can be awarded at the bottom end of the range too!
