Team USA punched it’s ticket to the World Baseball Classic final with a win over the Dominican Republic on Sunday night. Next up, Italy battles it out with Venezuela for the other spot in Tuesday’s championship encounter. The Venezuelans enter tonight’s showdown as hefty favorites, but we know the Italians will throw everything they can at their South American opponents.
The odds are shifting in Italy’s favor. Still, there’s value in backing the underdogs in this WBC semifinal.
Pitching Matchup
Keider Montero is the probable starter for Venezuela, and he needs to maximize his time on the mound to give his countrymen the best chance of advancing. Ranger Suarez lasted just 2.2 innings in Venezuela’s quarterfinal triumph over Japan. Even with one day rest, it’s too early in the season to expect the relievers to shoulder a similar burden on Monday night.
The Italians counter with Michael Lorenzen. The Royals starting pitcher isn’t immune to contact. Last season, Lorenzen gave up a 1.34 WHIP, while sitting in the bottom half of the league in barrel rate and average exit velocity. Italy’s bullpen has been a stabilizing force, but with seven different relievers toeing the rubber in the quarters, they’re in a similar position as the Venezuelans. Lorenzen needs to offer some longevity to avoid a taxed bullpen.
Potential Lineups
As we’ve seen throughout the tournament, both teams have competent starting lineups. Those bats should inflect some damage at loan Depot Park.
Led by Ronald Acuna Jr., Venezuela has had no problem putting runs on the board. They put up eight runs versus a typically stout Japanese side, and have contributors from top to bottom. This is how we expect the Venezuelans to line up.
- Ronald Acuna Jr. (RF)
- Luis Arraez (2B
- Maikel Garcia (3B)
- Willson Contreras (1B)
- Salvador Perez (DH)
- William Contreras (C)
- Ezequiel Tovar (SS)
- Wilyer Abreu (LF)
- Jackson Chourio (CF)
While they don’t possess the same star power, the Italians can counter with an equally intimidating batting order.
- Sam Antonacci (2B)
- Thomas Saggese (SS)
- Jakob Marsee (CF)
- Vinnie Pasquantino (1B)
- Jac Caglianone (RF)
- Dominic Canzone (DH)
- Andrew Fisher (3B)
- J.J. D’Orazio (C)
- Dante Nori (LF)
Betting Odds
In terms of roster composition, the Venezuelans have a clear advantage, and that’s reflected in the betting odds. They enter tonight’s semifinal matchup as -185 favorites, albeit coming down slightly off of the opening line. Italy is priced as +155 underdogs to claim victory in Miami.
As is always the case, the run line reflects that perceived gap. Venezuela is priced as -120 to cover the modest -1.5 run line, with Italy coming in at even money.
Finally, the total reflects the scoring potential of both lineups. Still, bettors are seeking refuge on the under. Tonight’s matchup features a total of 10.5, with the under juiced to -120 and the over currently listed at plus-money.
The Plays
While they don’t possess the superstar appeal, the Italians have delivered in every game this tournament. It may not be enough to pull off the outright upset, but Italy is a solid bet to cover the run line. As we saw last night, these teams are in mid-season form, and there’s more than just pride on the line when they take to the field.
Additionally, our preferred entry point in tonight’s contest is the over. Both lineups are doing damage, and neither pitching staff is capable of neutralizing their opponent. The bullpens are gassed, starting pitchers aren’t stretched out, and few pitchers have been immune from hard contact.
Looking Ahead
The winner of tonight’s clash sets up a heated championship showdown versus Team USA on Tuesday night. The Americans are installed as prohibitive favorites in the futures market, meaning whichever team advances faces a stiff challenge in the final.
If you’re holding futures tickets on any of the remaining teams, or even MVPs, don’t neglect your betting positions. There are two games left in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and bettors should be ready to hedge appropriately.
