We are in the thick of the college basketball season. Teams are in the middle of their conference schedules, and in no time at all, everyone will be gearing up for conference tournaments and March Matchups. Many will wait until we get closer to the year-end shenanigans before placing their bets. By then, most of the value will be sucked out of the betting lines.
The sharpest bettors are already making moves. Let’s break down how the National Championship odds have moved over the past few weeks.
Hottest Team on the Board
Undoubtedly, the Arizona Wildcats are the hottest commodity on the futures board. Just a few weeks ago, the top-ranked Wildcats were priced as mid-range +4000 betting options. But without a loss on the season, bettors are starting to believe in Arizona.
Heading into this weekend’s action, the Big 12 frontrunners have the second-shortest odds on the board, currently priced at +450. A position that’s validated by their elite metrics on both ends of the court. It’s too late to recommend this as a plus-ev play, but the sharpest bettors are holding much more valuable futures tickets.
Wolverines Another Crowd Favorite
Some blue blood programs have fallen by the wayside this season. Kansas is off to a sluggish start. Kentucky is nowhere close to living up to its usual standard. North Carolina is stuck in the mud and still trying to find its identity. While other programs are struggling to keep pace, the Michigan Wolverines are still kicking ass and taking names.
The third-ranked Wolverines have suffered one unexpected loss this season, but have otherwise maintained their Big Ten superiority. That dominance is also captured in the betting odds. Michigan is priced as the odds-on favorite to claim this year’s National Championship, listed at +400 on the BetMGM futures board.
Their dominance wasn’t always presumed, as the Wolverines sat as far back as +2000 just a few weeks ago. Armed with one of the best defenses in the country and an incredibly efficient offense, there may be no stopping Michigan from climbing the college basketball mountain again in 2026.
Other Top Contenders
Arizona and Michigan may be commanding most of the betting attention, but there are several other programs worth tracking as college basketball hits its stride.
Often overlooked playing in a West Coast mid-major conference, the Gonzaga Bulldogs are proving that it’s possible to reload instead of rebuild. The Zags are off to a 19-1 start, relying on their typically explosive offense to climb into the Top 10. Clearly, bettors like what they see. Gonzaga has gone from +3000 to +1500, underscoring their reputation as a perennial contender.
Bettors are also lining up to get a piece of two more recognizable programs. Compared to recent iterations, some of the shine has worn off the UConn Huskies. Nevertheless, they remain a legitimate contender, going from +1400 to +900.
Identically, the Purdue Boilermakers are making one last charge with some of their core pieces, seeing the same line movement as their Big East counterparts.
Teams on the Decline
None of that positive movement would be made possible without a handful of teams falling off the pace. Unfortunately, there are a few teams that stand out in the worst way.
Kentucky has been trying to reclaim its title as a college basketball powerhouse. The betting market has taken a firm stance against that happening. The Wildcats have gone from +2000 wild cards to +10000 longshots. Falling out of favor in the SEC is a bad look for Kentucky, and there’s no conceivable path back to the top this season.
Not as pronounced, the Michigan State Spartans are also losing betting momentum. Starting the year with respectably +3000 National Championship odds, the Spartans have fallen as low as +4000 in recent weeks. Their position has stabilized somewhat, but we’re still not believers in the Tom Izzo-led program.
BetMGM Market Data
The intersection of ticket and handle count is where bettors can truly identify the most profitable positions. In that regard, the Michigan Wolverines continue to stand out.
The Wolverines lead in both ticket and handle, albeit with an important distinction. Their 14.7% handle percentage exceeds their 11.7% ticket count. That imbalance points toward big-money positions taken by sharp bettors. Likewise, Purdue and UConn stand out with positive differentials.
Conversely, some notable programs remain a dumping ground for public money. Led by the Duke Blue Devils, Michigan State and Iowa State are also drawing higher ticket counts than handle, reflecting the pitfalls of backing public favorites.
National Championship Final Thoughts
The betting market will continue to adjust. The key to long-term success in futures market is identifying the value teams before the market adjusts. Michigan and Arizona are the current leaders, but sharp bettors are already taking up positions on teams that are being overlooked. Stay tuned to all the action and line movement to find the soft spots on college basketball’s futures board.
