There are slots out there with reels that move as part of the way the game works, and a player wonders if that helps your chances:
Do you think the games that have moving symbols (up or down) to make line hits increase your chance to win or are they even more volatile?Dana C.
There are some slots out there, such as Double Diamond Deluxe and Black Diamond Deluxe, where there are arrows on the reels and the reels will move based on rules of where they can move to as part of the game. Here’s an example of Brian playing Black Diamond Deluxe:
In this game, the arrows appear on the wild Black Diamond symbols, and if there is room for the symbol to move up or down (depending on the arrow direction) within the three visible reel spaces, it will pay the first outcome (if any), move, pay the next outcome, and move again (if still room) for a third and final outcome.
Here’s the thing – this is all window dressing. The slot is smart enough to know when the arrows will land and cause the reels to move, and that’s all part of the outcome that is decided when you hit spin.
The game makers could easily just set the reels up to winning outcomes and so on, but the moving arrows, even on losing spins, makes a three reel game more active and interesting. So it doesn’t increase the chances to win, because that’s all worked into the way the game plays and pays out.
Whether it makes a game more volatile can depend. On a game like Black Diamond Deluxe, where you can now potentially get three progressive payouts vs. 1 because of the way the wilds move, it most certainly makes the game more volatile.
On the other hand, on a game like the single line version of Double Diamond Deluxe, where the pay table is the same, and it’s just moving the symbols onto the payline, it’s likely no more or less volatile than the original single line Double Diamond. The arrows are just nudging symbols into positions for wins that would’ve just happened naturally on the original version.
So like many things with slots it will depend on game design. If you can win more in a spin vs. a previous version, it’s likely going to be more volatile.
