When you play slots, you tend to earn comp dollars. What happens if you save them up, a player wonders:

Let’s talk casino points. Are your comps based off the points you have in your bank? Should you use your points? If so, when is the best time? Will my comps drop if I use all my points?

Amanda R.

Generally speaking, your offers are based off your play, and not the points you have in your bank. Casinos look at the game you’re playing (to understand the house advantage), the size of your wager, and how long you played (especially how many wagers you’ve made) to calculate the math of the theoretical loss, or what you’d be expected to lose, on average.

That said, there are certainly indicators that sometimes that comp dollar bucket is factored into things. We’ve seen language in the legalese of some casino offers that reference an expected amount of comp dollar redemption as part of a trip – if you let them rack up and don’t use them, the calculator they use to determine comps might take that into account.

Should you let that bother you or deter you from using your comps? Probably not. Offers are traditionally calculated on previous play anyway, and your comp dollars are also related to previous play, so generally speaking casinos tend to factor all that in already and it’s yours to do what you want with.

We’ve certainly done our share of spending through comp dollars, as well as saving comp dollars for later, and we can’t say we’ve noticed any real difference. So while casinos could theoretically calculate it in, we don’t think it factors in often enough, or heavily enough, to worry about too much. As such, the best time to use it is when it makes sense for you, and not necessarily how it will hit your comps.
