While it often seems like casinos tend to work and act pretty uniformly, the reality is there’s often some subtle differences. We get asked about them on occasion, on topics like left over tickets or whether you have to spin off a jackpot. Other areas we often get asked about is the jackpot rules when multiple people are involved, or what happens if another player’s card is in the machine when you get one.
The differences often come down to house rules. House rules are the specific casino rules that govern things when you visit or place bets at a specific location. These rules can go from the overly simplistic and expected (“you must be 21 years of age to be on the casino floor”) to the sometimes unusual or specific (“luggage is not allowed on the casino floor”).
While gaming commissions establish the ground rules, they don’t always cover everything, and house rules both allow a casino to declare their specific rules that go above and beyond the specific rules required under gaming commission rules in their particular area.
Like anything, sometimes casinos will establish rules in reaction to scenarios that have happened on their casino floor, while other casinos may not have that rule because it simply hasn’t come up. In other cases, casinos will want to be very clear about certain things if they’re aiming to crack down on certain behavior.
One of the ones that caught our attention awhile ago was the casino that had signage that said if it’s not your card in the machine when a jackpot is won, you forfeit that jackpot. A recent one a player asked us about was whether they had to spin off the jackpot they won at the casino’s insistence.
Most players don’t tend to realize or care about specific house rules until it directly impacts them. Most casinos have them on their websites. Sometimes casino sportsbooks (which may or may not be run by the same owner as the casino) will have their own separately declared house rules.
If you think certain rules may impact your interest in playing at the casino, you can certainly request to see them and look them over first. Casino employees, particularly at the players club desk or cashier, should be able to point you in the right direction.
