In the past we’ve discussed the concept of a rescue feature – something that turns a losing spin into a winning one after the spin is seemingly completed.
This scenario can help create additional anticipation, because even if things seem to be not going your way it can suddenly turn around.
And that’s just a feature – sometimes you can randomly win a whole lot more:
I won a Grand Jackpot on a losing spin. I didn’t know that was even a thing. The bells went off and the Grand Jackpot popped up on the screen. I thought it was a glitch. Are there certain slot machines that this happens? Mine was on Midnight Express.

As you experienced, Rob, it’s definitely something that exists. Most of the ones we’re familiar with are on Aristocrat machines that have a hold and spin element. Not every one has it, but it’s a feature that one can potentially have among its pay options.
Most prominently, the random Grand progressive jackpot can be won on Lightning Link and its sibling Dragon Link, in which the Major and Grand progressive jackpots can be awarded randomly (and Brian Christopher once won a Major this way). Interestingly, this was largely abandoned in newer updates to the series.
Another example is an older Aristocrat slot machine, Gold Bonanza, in which any of the four progressive jackpots can be awarded randomly.
It’s not just Aristocrat though – it can show up in other games, such like Konami’s Bingo Frenzy, which has a random Grand progressive jackpot possibility.
So it’s definitely out there, and the most surefire way to know is to check a slot’s pay table, as it will confirm if such an element exists. If you don’t see it, it’s not awarded that way.
