We are on the precipice of crowning the 2026 Stanley Cup Champion. The Carolina Hurricanes triumphed over the Eastern Conference, while the Vegas Golden Knights upended the West on route to their third final since 2018. The Canes have been knocking at the door for the past few seasons, abandoning all courtesy and kicking down the structure throughout their unapologetic run.
The betting market has the Hurricanes out in front, but the Golden Knights have no strangers to upsets. We’re evaluating the analytics and betting markets to see where the advantage lies ahead of the best-of-seven series!
Hurricanes Drowned the Competition
It wasn’t much of a fight in any of the first three playoff rounds. The Hurricanes have secured their Stanley Cup berth while nearly sweeping their way through the East. They dispatched the Senators and Flyers in four games, before needing five to best the Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Final. By the end of the series it was clear, no team in the conference could contain the mighty Hurricanes.
Of course, Carolina’s dominance is captured in its analytics profile. They lead the league with a 60.7% expected goals-for rating, showcasing their assertiveness in both ends of the ice. Through 13 playoff games, they are averaging 27.1 scoring and 11.2 high-danger chances per game, while limiting opponents to respective 16.9 and 7.5 averages.
Those advantages were on display throughout the first three rounds, and we expect the Hurricanes to maintain that standard against the Golden Knights.
Vegas Overcame the Odds
From an analytics perspective, Vegas can’t keep pace with their Eastern Conference counterparts. The Knights sit in the middle of the pack with a 50.4% expected goals-for rating, putting them eighth among 16 playoff teams. More concerningly, their elite performances have been more intermittent, and they’ve spent more time chasing the puck than having it on their stick.
Through three rounds, the Knights have been outplayed in eight of their 16 contests. Moreover, they have eclipsed the 60.0% eGF threshold just twice, a standard the Hurricanes have blown past in seven of 13.
Of all their analytics shortcomings, the Knights’ most pronounced disadvantage in their inability to sustain quality scoring chances. Heading into the Stanley Cup Final, Vegas has produced just 9.3 high-danger chances per game, while outchancing their opponents in nine of 16. They were able to offset those issues against an Avs’ squad with questionable goaltending, but it’s unlikely the Golden Knights renew that standard against the superior Hurricanes.
Odds Movement
Since the start of the season, the Hurricanes were viewed as a Stanley Cup contender. That position has solidified with each passing round. Carolina entered the season as +900 frontrunners, dropping to +500 by the start of the postseason. That downward trend has continued in each subsequent round, going to +275, to +175, to their current valuation of -145.
Assuredly, Vegas’ odds have moved in conjunction with their playoff wins, albeit much less convincingly. The Golden Knights entered the campaign at +1200, going from +1000, to +600, to +575, before being installed as +120 underdogs versus the Canes.
Clearly, those longer odds have tempted bettors, with Vegas now commanding a 21.0% betting handle, outpacing the Hurricanes’ mark of 15.7%. At the same time, both teams have nearly identical ticket percentages of 10.4% (Golden Knights) and 10.0% (Hurricanes), implying that BetMGM should be rooting for a Carolina victory.
Conn Smythe Considerations
The Golden Knights’ betting dominance is also captured in the Conn Smythe market. The Playoff MVP award sees two Vegas skaters positioned atop the betting board, with Mitch Marner and Jack Eichel priced as the top contenders.
Currently, Marner is positioned out in front, listed as the +150 favorite. The Knights’ winger leads the playoffs in scoring, and has earned the heftiest market share at the outset of the final. Marner’s 17.5% handle and 11.5% ticket count are the highest marks of all remaining players. Even if the Golden Knights don’t prevail, Marner will be in the Conn Smythe conversation.
Similarly, Jack Eichel has emerged as a sharp-backed candidate. He sits a more distant +1500 on the odds board, but with his 14.0% handle more than doubling his 6.3% ticket count, clearly big money bettors have targeted the Knights’ forward.
Sandwiched between those skaters is the top Hurricanes’ candidate. At +250, Frederik Andersen is priced just below Marner. With 14.6% handle and 7.8% ticket count, the Canes’ netminder is the obvious favorite to claim the award if Carolina triumphs over the Knights.
Final Thoughts
It all comes down to this. The favorite Hurricanes will try to sustain their current form and claim their first Stanley Cup Championship since 2006. Standing in their way is a ferocious Golden Knights squad that is more than comfortable playing as the underdog. Vegas has picked up the betting steam, but we’d be shocked if the Golden Knights have what it takes to get past the Hurricanes.
