Did Slot Tournaments Cause Button Slapping?

Spin button on an Ainsworth slot machine

If you have ever participated in a slot tournament, you know the general advice is often to slap that button as often as possible. Could slot tournaments have something to do with the button slappers on the casino floor?

Is button slapping caused because those people also play in slot tournaments? I have watched videos on slot tournaments and that’s what they do.

You know, we had that thought at first, but over time we came to reconsider. Here’s why: Most of the button slapping seems to happen on certain types of games and bonuses.

Have you ever participated in a slot tournament?

Perhaps backing this up are recent results from a poll on Brian Christopher’s YouTube channel, where more than half of players polled said they have never participated in a slot tournament.

So where do the slappers get this habit? In our experience, virtually all of the slapping happens on Link games with a hold and spin, such as Lightning Link, Dragon Link, and to a lesser extent games with similar hold and spin bonus types like Ultimate Fire Link.

In those bonuses, you’ll see players tapping the button and the screen in places where there’s still empty spaces, like those actions will have some impact on whether a ball will land in that particular spot.

The thing about the Lightning Link/Dragon Link machines specifically is while the button press to start the spin does determine what happens in that spin (the bonus is driven by an RNG just like a regular spin is), tapping spaces and the button does absolutely nothing to change what stops in those spaces, and doesn’t even serve to speed up the pace of them dropping! Those actions are doing absolutely nothing.

So why do players do this? Superstition, perhaps, or hoping to have control over something for which they ultimately don’t. But rarely do you see people banging on other types of screens, although we won’t say never because we’ve seen someone break the glass on a three reel machine before, and bangers on games that don’t have a hold and spin bonus at all.

So we’ll instead award blame to Aristocrat for introducing the hold and spin bonus, and in the process that incessant button slapping. But we won’t go too hard on them, because those games are still awfully fun to play.
