Step into just about any casino and you’ll see marketing for their players club. Is there a specific reason why casinos want you to use one?
Why do casinos want you to use a players card?

Casinos have over time been savvier about understanding their players. The way they do this is through the use of a players card when we as players play.
This is the exact same concept as a grocery store requiring you to register for a store card to qualify for specific discounts within the store – by having you use a card, they can learn more about you and your shopping patterns.
It turns out that we humans tend to fall into categories. While we may think we’re all unique, many of us shop and spend in similar ways. And by grouping various groups of people in similar buckets together, they can better target us for promotions and offers that help bring us in to spend more money.
So it’s one of those things where there’s a trade-off – we’re effectively selling the casinos our data, in return for the comp dollars we earn as we play, the discounts we receive with our card, and the offers we get in the mail to come back and visit again.
Casinos can also use this high level information to align with marketing partners to offer other benefits to their players, such as those free cruise vouchers many casinos give out nowadays.
The casinos know what your budget tends to be per visit and over time, and they can sync with the cruise lines, who can use that information to know what to offer you, since you’ll likely bring an expected budget based on a cruise based on your casino budget. Again, patterns!
So that’s the core reason – like a lot of businesses, data is a huge helper in understanding their customers and how to properly support them and encourage them back, and the players card is the bridge that makes that happen.
